Success across the island’s community was the theme of last night’s glittering Enterprise Awards gala dinner, attended by more than 800 business and community leaders.

Jersey Enterprise are delighted to announce the winners of this year’s Jersey Enterprise Awards, which this year celebrated its own achievement – a decade of rewarding local business success. Over 70 companies were nominated for awards and Senator Alan Maclean, Minister for Economic Development said; ‘The standard of entrants has been higher than ever before, and is a clear message that even in a difficult financial environment, local businesses have the adaptability and initiative necessary to thrive’.

The gala dinner at the Queen’s Hall at Fort Regent began with a champagne reception at Fort Regent, before awards ceremony host, Clive Anderson took the floor to present the nine awards to the businesses and individuals the judges felt had led the way in 2011.

Here is a full list of the winners of the tenth Jersey Enterprise Awards

NatWest Small Business Award – The Jersey Sports & Spinal Clinic
The judges felt that choosing a winner for this category had been a hard decision, but the Jersey Sports & Spinal Clinic stood out as ‘a business that has continued to grow in a highly competitive environment where reputation and service delivery are absolutely key’
Shortlisted: Harpers Catering, Mr Fish, Pennyfeathers

Altis Medium Business Award – The Inn Hotel
The judges were particularly impressed by this company’s innovative business model, which had enabled them to adapt against the odds during a harsh business environment. They also cited The Inn’s client focus, and low employee turnover as key factors in their decision.
Shortlisted: Greenlight, iQ Music and Computer Solutions

Credit Suisse Large Business Award – Liberation Group
Commenting on the reasons for their choice, the judges said, ‘the winner demonstrated that a traditional business which is out of favour in many parts of the mainland can be transformed with the right leadership focus and investment in people, customers and product’.
Shortlisted: Camerons, Spoor & Fisher

Ogier Training & Development Award – Waitrose
The judges felt that the winner demonstrated an outstanding commitment to staff development and said, ‘Waitrose has a clear approach to recruiting and training staff and their training plan is comprehensive. They pay particular attention to making their training relevant and specific for their Jersey employees’.
Shortlisted: Advange to Work and Advance Plus, Hautlieu School

Guiton Group Ambassador of the Year Award – Eric Young Orchid Foundation
In selecting the Eric Young Orchid Foundation as the winner of this year’s Ambassador of the Year Award, the judges said, ‘this year’s winner has, for over half a century, ensured that Jersey is associated with excellence in all corners of the world’

Condor Ferries Community Award – The League of Friends
The judges explained that they were struck by the fact that ‘behind all the many charities and organisations that were nominated, there are numerous individuals who work so hard for the benefit of others in the Island’. However, there was one charity that stood out to the judges, and this year the Condor Ferries Community Award was presented to The League of Friends.
Shortlisted: Brian Curtis MBE, Jersey Special Gymnastics Club

Indigo Lighthouse Group Entrepreneur of the Year Award – Nigel Blandin, 4 Hire
The judges felt that Nigel Blandin was a natural choice for the Award, a ‘serial entrepreneur with a proven track record’.
Shortlisted: Simon Harper, Eliot Lincoln

Jersey Electricity Environmental Award – La Mare Wine Estate
Selecting La Mare Wine Estate to receive the Jersey Electricity Environmental Award, the judges said, ‘our winner is indeed a worthy one and importantly, the business has also created opportunities for new, green products of outstanding provenance for which consumers are prepared to pay a premium’.
Shortlisted: Geomarine and Port of Jersey, Jersey College for Girls

JT Business of the Year Award – Liberation Group
The judges’ opinion was that, despite a challenging market, this company was able to exceed all its targets and deliver excellent results to its shareholders. They said, ‘Liberation Group has outperformed the market trend and continues to deliver strong growth across all areas of its operation’.

What’s got five miles of cable, 3,400 legs, 3,500 glasses and four super-bright projectors? No it’s not the start of a really bad joke, it’s actually the Jersey Enterprise Awards gala dinner on Friday 2nd March at Fort Regent.

The final preparations are being made for the largest event in the island’s social calendar, the tenth Jersey Enterprise Awards, where over 800 people will gather to celebrate the achievements of local business leaders. Putting an event of this size together is a huge undertaking. Along with enough cable to run from Elizabeth Castle to Mont Orgueil, there will be 2,000 square metres of carpet, four big screens and four 17,000-lumen projectors which have been specially imported by Delta Productions to make this year’s Jersey Enterprise Awards an unforgettable event. Delta’s Managing Director Simon Gasston said, ‘to produce an event of this size and status takes months of preparation to ensure nothing is overlooked. Technology really has to be at the forefront of this event and to ensure the very high standards expected of this event we have invested in new equipment, which we are very excited to be able to use at the Enterprise Awards’. Things are hotting up in the kitchens as well, as Jersey Pottery and their team of talented caterers get ready to put on a feast for the event’s attendees. ‘We start preparations from Thursday onwards. On the night, a team of 30 chefs and 70 waiting staff ensure that everyone gets their food on time’ said Matthew Jones, Director of Jersey Pottery. The team at Jersey Pottery have been busy sourcing the ingredients for the evening’s gala dinner – 270 kilos of beef, 5 kilos of locally grown herbs and 40 litres of stock for the red wine sauce, which also includes 24 bottles of wine and port. Awards attendees are expected to get through 1,200 bottles of wine, 1,300 glasses of champagne and create plenty of washing up, with 3,500 glasses and 4,250 pieces of cutlery being provided for the event from Jersey Pottery.
Sponsorship from the Garenne Group means that the tenth Jersey Enterprise Awards will be hosted by Clive Anderson, the award-winning comedian and presenter, who will be entertaining audiences with anecdotes from his career in comedy. The event begins with a champagne reception sponsored by Vestra Wealth, followed by a three-course dinner and the Awards ceremony in the Queens Hall, Fort Regent on Friday 2nd March. The Jersey Enterprise Awards are designed to acknowledge and celebrate the success of businesses and entrepreneurial individuals within Jersey’s community. Nine awards will be presented to the people and businesses that stood out in 2011, including the NatWest Small Business Award, Altis Medium Business Award, Credit Suisse Large Business Award, Indigo Lighthouse Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Jersey Electricity Environmental Award, Ogier Training and Development Award, Condor Ferries Community Award, Guiton Group Ambassador of the Year and the JT Overall Business of the Year.

Clive Anderson began his career as a barrister and took his first steps into comedy as a scriptwriter for shows like Not The Nine O’Clock News and Alias Smith & Jones and was the first stand-up act to appear at The Comedy Store.
James Baker

Tell us about your business…

‘I won Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2008 Enterprise Awards for a number of ventures including Grafters, Jersey’s only Blue collar recruitment and employment agency which I co-founded. We handle workers primarily for the construction and fulfillment industries and supply highly specialized workers through to less skilled site operatives. I built the Lido Medical Centre which pioneered primary health care in the Island, I ran Jersey Yacht Management which is the Islands leading offshore registration provider and also ran a business consultancy business which supported a number of start-ups on and off the Island.’

Why did you enter the Enterprise Awards?

To raise the profile of the businesses I was involved in.

What did it mean to you to win?

It was a great way to spotlight the hard work of all of those involved in the businesses and I hope that everyone was able to enjoy some of the reflected glory!

What have been some of the business opportunities / developments that you feel have resulted from winning the award?

Being an ‘awards’ winner gave me credibility to speak to potential customers and further promote ourselves. This was particularly relevant with Grafters.

What would you say to people considering entering?

Know your business; know your industry and enter it!

What relevance do you feel the Enterprise Awards have?

They’re hugely relevant in an island business community. All businesses must remember that professionalism is what separates the good from the ‘not so good’. The Enterprise Awards are a way of competing on a professional basis and enables all business operators to engage in some introspection!

Quickfire round

Uni: Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and then Cranfield Business School (MBA)

First job: Cleaning boats

Favourite book: The Adventure Motorcycling Handbook

Last holiday: Skydiving in California

Most likely to say… ‘you’re only late if you want to be’ – annoying I know, but I really dislike people who are late!

Mode of transport: Motorbike

Favourite gadget: Mini Leatherman

Tell us about your business…

‘Signtech is the current Channel Island leader in all areas of signage, including print, design, road marking, illumination and electrics. With services and products ranging from vehicle graphics and window films, to fascia signs and digital light boxes, our company is able to cater to all levels of client, be they home owner or UK franchise.’

Why did you enter the Enterprise Awards?

Entering the Enterprise Awards helps you focus on your business – where you’ve come from, where you are and where you’re heading – which is a hugely valuable exercise.

What did it mean to you to win?

Winning the award has not only boosted staff morale and performance whilst strengthening the very core of the business, it has also reaffirmed our belief in all that we are doing, allowing us to take the company to the next level.

What have been some of the business opportunities / developments that you feel have resulted from winning the award?

Winning the awards has given us the boost to develop and evolve our brand to the next level and give us a renewed energy from within the company which translates into improved customer services and performance levels. We have had an increase in small business enquiries, seeking start-up advice.

What would you say to people considering entering?

I would tell people to use the process as an opportunity to examine your business on every level and to re-evaluate your core structure, vision and goals. It is not about winning, it is about helping you to see your business from the inside out, and is a process that all businesses should undergo on an annual basis.

What relevance do you feel the Enterprise Awards have?

The annual event gives local businesses the push they need to evaluate and reflect on where they have come from and where they are heading and without the awards many businesses would not see this as a priority, which of course it is.

Cooper & Co

Tell us about your business…

‘Cooper & Co is one of the oldest remaining locally owned Jersey companies. We import green coffee from all over the world which we roast ourselves and then package it into whatever format is required and offer training in how to use our products appropriately. Alongside that core part of our business sits the teas and other products associated with hot beverages.’

Why did you enter the Enterprise Awards?

Initially because I felt my staff were working very hard here in a difficult competitive environment, and I wanted to get them broader recognition. We didn’t win the first year we entered, but I found the process of reviewing our business activities very helpful. The problem with a businesss is that you don’t step away enough to actually think about and reflect on what you’re doing and where you’re going.

What did it mean to you to win?

Relief! We’d entered three times and I knew we’d been doing well enough to win. The second time we were a runner up and I felt a real sense of disappointment, but also a feeling of ‘let’s give it one more go’. Maybe that’s the entrepreneur in me! I believed we had something good, I wanted to prove it and the judges saw something in us.

What have been some of the business opportunities / developments that you feel have resulted from winning the award?

What it did do was give us a brand awareness, and moved us up in the general public’ consciousness. It lifted us and I think it lifted me as well, as an individual and opened doors to people who wouldn’t have known me otherwise.

What would you say to people considering entering?

It’s a good exercise in basically putting down on paper what you do as a business, and examining things like your cashflow, and whether you’re as successful as you think you are. The feedback from the judges will give you the ideas you need. The biggest thing most small businesses want are ideas – they can’t afford a business consultant, but that’s where the judges opinions can be extremely helpful and give you an insight as to what they believe you’re about as a company.

What relevance do you feel the Enterprise Awards have?

In recession they’re probably more relevant than in boom times. It’s a challenge to be successful when the market is against you. That tests your mettle and your creativity as to how to maintain turnover in a shrinking market and if you can somethow put that on paper and get that through to the judges, you’re in with a good chance.
